Increased heart disease risk associated with processed red meat, but not unprocessed

A new study shows eating processed red meat -- such as hot dogs, bacon, sausage, and cold cuts -- is linked to increased risks of heart disease and diabetes.  But the study, published in Circulation, shows no such link for unprocessed red meat.

Eating one serving a day of processed meat -- or the equivalent of a single hot dog or two slices of salami -- was associated with a 42% increased risk for heart disease and a 19% increased risk for diabetes in the study, conducted by researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health.  Click here for more details.

Study Links Reduced Fertility to Flame Retardant Exposure

The first study linking flame retardant exposure to impaired fertility was released earlier this month by UC Berkeley researchers.  The chemical causing the reduced fertility, pentaBDE,  was primarily used in furniture and baby product foam to meet the California furniture flammability standard TB117.  Although this flame retardant has been banned by the Stockholm convention and is not currently made, most of the pentaBDE that was ever produced is still in furniture, baby products, and carpet cushion in homes in California and other states.  See the rest of the article here:

Does the Vaccine Matter?

from The Atlantic magazine, November 2009
